ANOTHER FIRST FOR PM MODI
When world leaders visit Israel for the first time, they all visit Yad Vashem, the country's official Holocaust and perhaps the Israel Museum. Because Modi is the first Indian PM to visit Israel, he also becomes the first one to visit the Indian Military cemetery. "Around 150 kilometers from here, there is a slice of history in the city of Haifa in Israel that is very dear to my country. This is the final resting place for 44 of the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I to liberate the city," Modi said while in Jerusalem.
THE BATTLE
On August 2,1914, Ottomans joined World War II on the side of the Central Powers (Germany) against the British Empire, France and Russia. The alliance was created as part of a joint-cooperative effort that would strengthen and modernize the failing Ottoman military, as well as provide Germany safe passage into neighboring British colonies. The British-led Indian Brigade fought to liberate Haifa from Ottoman Empire's over 400-year long rule over the region. On September 23, 1918, the 15th (Imperial Service) Cavalry Brigade, comprising lancers (horsemen) from the regiments of these princely states and armed with only swords and spears (lances), attacked positions held by Ottoman Turks in and around Haifa city. The Indian brigade, under the leadership of British General Edmund Allenby eventually succeded in liberating Haifa. A total of 1,350 German and Ottoman prisoners were captured by the two Indian regiments.
